AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and ojectives includes
1. To organize all registered nurses who are qualified for membership
2. To provide a forum or avenue where nurses speak with one voice
3. To set and improve standard of services which the nurses give to the general public
4 To improve nursing education at all levels throughout the federation
5. To participate in planning policy making and administration of health care delivery services at all levels of government
6. To promote forum whereby understanding, fellowship and unity can be achieved and maintained at all times amongst all members of nursing profession
7. To raise the standard of the profession, obtain just and proper remuneration, hours of work and other condition of services that will enhance the dignity of the professional and non socioeconomic interests of members
8 To extend protection-legal or otherwise to member of the association where established and when connected with the employment/practise of its member
9. To seek the interest and act as guardian to other groups within the nursing profession such as student nurses and midwives
10. To uphold the international codes of nursing ethics and position statement enunciated by the international council of nurses, as well as world health organization as they affect nursing practise
11. To affiliate with the the Nigerian labour congress and/fraternize with any other relevant international professional organization with aims and objectives
12.To established and maintain good relationship with the member of the public, other profession, trade unions, employers of nurses and all governments of Nigeria
13. To established and maintain good interpersonal relationship with nursing colleagues in Africa, common wealth and other parts of the world
14. To operate benefit schemes for the members as may be decided by the national executive council from time to time
There are various professional associations who fought for their respective body. Among whom are NNA (Nigeria Nurse Association) PAMON (Professional Association of Midwives of Nigeria), Professional Association of Midwives, Public Health Nursing, Psychiatric e.t.c They negotiate with the Government on their Association matter, until Dec. 8, 1977 when all the Association spoke with one voice that gave birth to only one recognized professional body. Before the finally joined in 1995 to form a JAC (Joint Action Committee) in reaction to poor reward from Udoji commission to demand for better condition which was ephemeral. Because of division among various Associated 5 groups of concern citizen of the profession started to work on how to unite all body. They are namely:
- Late Mr E. Adelowo (Former National Secretary to PAMON)
- Late Alhaji Yaya Ali (Branch Secretary to NNA)
- Mr M.A Olabode (Zonal Secretary Western State NNA)
- Mr Kola Oyedojo (Head Dept of Nursing UI)
- Chief Ola Babajide (Rep BNE)
The committee worked together and in June 25, 1976 all the representatives of all various associations were brought together under the same roof which leads to the Birth of NANNM. The associated officially inaugurated, directed and supervised by representative of the administrative for Trade Union Affairs of FMOL on 8th Dec 1977 which took place at Lagos. They were honored with official certificate of registration as the only recognized trade union for Nurses Legally permitted to enter registration with the FGN in all manners affecting NCM Practical and remuneration.
So NANNM is an association totally independent of government control. This is an umbrella association for all categories of Nurses unlike NMCN which is a federal Government parastatal
